A flat washer's purpose is to distribute the fastener's load while reducing heat and friction during the tightening process. They can also be used as spacers, as is common in industrial and domestic applications.
Their size is usually determined by the diameter of the bolt or stud they are used with, so that the diameter of the bolt is the Inner Diameter (I.D.) of the washer.
As with bolts and nuts, washers are available in a variety of materials and finishes, offering a wide choice of strength, corrosion resistance, and cost.
