Square Nuts, Zinc

As the name implies, square nuts have a 4-sided, square design. This square profile provides a greater bearing surface when installing onto a bolt. Square nuts are designed for use with square headed bolts, and the large surface provides better resistance to loosening. When using square nuts, as with hex nuts, use flat washers of the correct size and material.

Square nuts have four sides, of course, which, when compared to hex nuts, provide both benefits and draw-backs for their use. Due to the fact that each side is much longer than the sides of a comparable hex nut, "rounding" of the corners is almost impossible. But tightening the nut with a wrench requires access to a full 90° turning angle, as opposed to only 60° with hex nuts.
Providing a recess for the nut to fit into, to limit its spin, is much simpler than with hex nuts. And again the longer sides mean you can allow greater tolerance without risking rounding out the corners of the hole. This also makes them ideal for use inside a track, rail, or strut system that has two parallel sides that confine movement.
